A British Airways Concorde set the record for a commercial flight between London and New York at an incredible 2 hours 52 minutes and 59 seconds. Although the normal flying time for this remarkable aircraft was between 3 hours and 3 1/2 hours - more than half standard subsonic flights which are around 8 hours. For 26 years it took the great and the good from A to B at an eye-watering Mach 2. I lived under its flight path in west London for a decade and while those four Rolls Royce Olympus engines rattled window frames and scared old ladies and dogs, I never failed to cast an eye skyward whenever it was in earshot, thrilled to the core and smiling like an idiot.
