Commission an Aviation Piece

Please say hello if you are considering having a drawing or painting made of something aviation-related, perhaps to do with the combat or flying experiences of a family member or friend. I am, of course also happy to take-on non-aviation commissions, but to keep things simple, here I shall just talk about aviation. 

Some things to think about when ordering a commissioned piece: 

"But I Don't Know What I want":

If you want to commission a piece, but you don't know what you want, I can help you with this. Tell me about the person in the commission and I will give you some ideas. Photos of them and snippets from their log books are also helpful. 

In conversation with you, I will hone-in on something significant and build a verbal concept around that. I will probably suggest A1 size Archers paper and either pencil or acrylic paint. 

I Have a "Feel" for WWII Aircraft:

My niche is WWII, but I can paint or draw aircraft from any era. It's just that I have a solid understanding of WWII history and a good "feel" for WWII aircraft. I grew up around WWII pilots (my father and most of his friends were WWII pilots) and I spent decades reading about the war and interviewing men who flew in the war.

It takes me anything from a week to a month to create a piece, depending on its size and complexity. The price is reflected in the amount of work involved and cost of materials and despatch. I will give you a quote shortly after we have come up with a plan for a piece that gives you, or the recipient, joy for the rest of your days. 

Framing Is Not Included with Originals:

Framing is not included for finished pieces; although, prints can be ordered with frames.

Oil paintings (slow) vs acrylic / pencil (relatively quick):

Oil paintings take half a year or more to dry and cannot easily be shipped until they are dry. However, prints can be made of an oil painting as soon as it is finished. So if you commission an oil painting, you could also order a print or prints of it and receive them promptly. And then get the oil painting when it is dried and varnished.

Acrylic pieces dry quickly and can be despatched with no waiting time. The same of course is true for pencil drawings.  My recommendation is either an acrylic painting or pencil drawing if you want the piece relatively quickly.

Another advantage with acrylic or pencil is they can be despatched in a tube, which makes shipping cheaper. Although please note, acrylic paintings should not be left rolled-up, they should be laid flat as soon as possible. Oil paintings must be despatched flat.

Sizes:

Standard sizes are listed at the bottom of this page. I normally work in the A0 to A2 range of sizes; where A0 is quite large and A2 is about as small as I can suggest before losing visual impact. A lot of people opt for A1 size. BTW I sometimes work in other custom sizes, particularly broad and shallow landscape to enable the wings of an aircraft to be captured. 

Other:

Once we agree on a concept, I ask for 50% in advance and the balance prior to despatch. Payment can be made via PayPal or bank transfer in your currency using my Wise.com account. 

Changing a piece's concept or theme after work has started on it, may incur extra fees to cover extra time and effort, and possibly materials.  

I ship my work all over the world, by courier.
